The 19th press conference on Guangdong's fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) was held in Guangzhou today.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) was successfully isolated from patient faeces by Prof. Zhong Nanshan’s team and the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, according to Zhao Jincun, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease.
"This finding indicates the possibility of transmission through poor bathroom hygiene, however, further confirmation requires more studies. People shouldn’t panic." Zhao said. He emphasized the importance of exercising good hygiene, for example, washing hands after going to the toilet, and closing the lid when flushing.
Liu Guanxian, Counsel of the Health Commission of Guangdong Province, noted that daily new cases confirmed in Guangdong had gradually declined, since the first peak of 127 cases were reported on January 31st.
From January 26th to February 2nd, 1-3 patients were discharged from hospital every day, and then there was a clear increase. Over these two days, Guangdong has discharged 60 patients on February 11th, and 43 on February yesterday.
Liu announced that Guangdong will start CT imaging in the diagnosis of suspected patients so as to diagnose suspected cases as early as possible and contain the epidemic.
“At present, there is no specific treatment for the coronavirus COVID-19,” said Cai Weiping, Director of Infectious Diseases Department of the Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital. Nonetheless, some TCM treatments can ease patients’ symptoms.
“Since the middle-aged and elderly are the most susceptible groups, we advise them to keep warm, reduce going out, and avoid fatiguing activity,” said Qin tiehe, Director of ICU of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, before adding “If you feel uncomfortable, tired, or have a fever, go to see a doctor immediately.”
